  • Flagstone Patio

This 500 sq ft. flagstone patio needed to support the weight of a large hot tub so our base layer was significantly thick.

Rosetta Grand Flagstone (Fond Du Lac) was used in the construction of this patio. We created custom edging by cutting left over pieces of the stone and securing them with pins. A small mulch bed surrounded the patio. Finally we planted a variety of ornamental grasses to give it a “beach vibe”. Click here to view a video of the patio on our companies Youtube channel. The flagstone patio transformed the entire feel of this backyard. It was a lot of fun to turn this inner city backyard into a little paradise for our clients. Patios are a great way to add character to your landscape. Flagstone patios require a little more annual upkeep than cement patios. However, over the years they will prove to be a much better option because of overall repair costs.

Unique looks are easily achieved with natural stone and paver installations. If you are looking to create a usable hard surface somewhere on your property hardscape construction may be the choice for you. With a variety of color and style options available you are guaranteed to find a paver patio that is right for you.

  • Landscape Tree Ring Design

Tree rings are a great way to add onto the design and feel of your landscape.

Replacing these old wood timbers with light grey Crestone blocks made a huge difference. Other examples of using Crestone blocks can be seen here. We extended the flower bed space and created depth in front while keeping it shallow in the back. In short, the modern block tree ring complemented the house very nicely. Stepping this tree ring down into the hill enables it to give a grand appearance from the front while making the bed subtle and visible from above. Often times grass will have a hard time growing around the base of a tree. This is when tree rings become a clever way to fill in that unwanted look. They offer you an easy solution to help improve your landscape design.

Tree rings are a great way to accent your trees and create more available space for planting. Planting a group of Hostas around a tree is one of the simplest and cheapest options. It’s surprising how much they can improve the look of your property. Tree rings are also a great area to use for annual gardens. Vibrant colors that annuals produce tend to stand out even more when surround something like a big oak tree. Medium size boulders are also great to use when making a tree ring. Whether using plants, blocks or stone you are guaranteed to find a style that you enjoy. Concord NW Landscaping Facebook.

  • Hardscape Wall (Denver Brick )

This hardscape project consisted of building a retaining wall using Denver Blocks.

Landscaping retaining wall New Buffalo Michigan
The purpose of this wall was to create depth and distance between the ground and the houses thermal padding that sat above the foundation. The client wanted this design to prevent water damage to the house. The new hardscape retaining wall connected to the current retaining wall that ran along the other side of the house. In total, the trench reached a total depth of 48″ and had a total length of approx. 35′. We tied the clients downspouts into a drainage zone we created that runs behind the retaining wall.

Making sure that there is a proper drainage zone behind the retaining wall is a key factor in the overall stability of the wall. On this specific wall the drainage zone consisted of a one foot wide area that was filled with #8 limestone. Denver blocks can be a good choice for taller walls that hold back a lot of pressure. These blocks come in color schemes such as sienna, quarry grey and tan. Weighing in at around 60 lbs per block they can be a lot to handle without the proper equipment and tools. This project involved removing the old patio and replacing it using riverfront pavers. We also filled empty spots with decorative stone, built a culvert and installed a new paver walkway. Our client wanted a larger patio for their pool area that would allow for a grill station and an outdoor sitting area. Accenting the large tan pavers with a light grey border worked well with the color scheme of the house. The vibrant western sunset rocks we installed really made this backyard area stand out. A walkway was created on the side of the house which nicely tied into the pool patio in back. This property is located on the bottom of a large hill that does not have street drains. They were experiencing a lot of issues with the driveways sub-base washing out. For that reason we built a culvert to protect the area from further erosion. A culvert is a structure that allows water to flow under a road, railroad, trail, or similar obstruction from one side to the other. Typically embedded so as to be surrounded by soil, a culvert may be made from a pipe, reinforced concrete or other material.

Tasked with creating a large 800 sq ft patio around a newly installed pool. A lot of grading and excavating took place on this job in order to achieve what the client wanted. The patio extended from the back deck and connected to the garage door. Then spanned the entire length of two sides of the pool. Once the patio was installed we created a rock bed on the steep slope next to the patio with brick edging to prevent erosion and look more appealing. More rock beds were created to cover the septic D-box and the remaining sides of the pool. 50ft of PVC drainage was ran underground to eliminate the standing water issue they had near to diving board. Last but not least we built a small retaining wall to hold back sand from the eroding hill next to the woods. Drainage is an important part of any landscape. Building a pool is a big investment and you want to be sure that you’re making wise choices about its design. After all, you want the pool patio to enhance your pool’s beauty and value—not detract from it.

Besides wanting the overall aesthetics to work, you also want it to function properly. Functionality is an important aspect that is integral to your overall enjoyment of the pool. This will be the place where you’ll lounge and read a good book, sit to watch your kids swim, or maybe even make use of nearby amenities such as your outdoor pavilion or kitchen. (source)

  • Retaining Walls

chesterton landscape company | wood retaining wall railroad ties
Tearing out these old rotted wood retaining walls was no small task. After removing nearly 100 used railroad ties we then regarded the area as needed. The client wanted the same style of walls so once the demolition was completed; the walls were rebuilt using new railroad ties. 6ft pieces of rebar were driven through the walls. Penetrating a couple feet into the ground to make sure the walls could hold back the heavy load. After the retaining walls were up we lined the areas with weed barrier and created large rock beds. Drainage zones were created to direct gutter water underground away from the house and walls. Adding over 20 tons of river rock really brightened up this heavily wooded lot during night time. It created a very calm vibe when the moonlight reflected off the rocks.

Retaining walls are relatively rigid walls that support soil laterally so that it can be retained at different levels on the two sides. Retaining walls restrain soil to a slope that it would not naturally hold. They are used to bound soils between two different elevations often in areas of terrain possessing undesirable slopes or in areas where the landscape needs to be shaped severely and engineered for more specific purposes like hillside farming or roadway overpasses. A retaining wall that retains soil on the backside and water on the frontside is called a seawall or a bulkhead. (source)

These homeowners recently built a new house. After going over options they decided to go with a flagstone walkway. Grand Flagstone maintains the attractive texture and scale of large natural flagstone. Plus a raised flower bed, stone edging and drainage solutions done. They were having problems with erosion because of how much water the two south side downspouts were emitting. We connected the two into one large 4″ PVC drain that ran under ground beneath the walkway which then terminated in the yard 30′ away from the house.

Additionally, the unit thicknesses are consistent, making for a comfortable, quality finished installation. With irregular, natural stone shapes, Grand Flagstone slabs will fit like perfect puzzle pieces into your landscaping vision. Your patio or path will blend right in with the great outdoors. Plus, made of wetcast concrete, these pavers and slabs are as durable as they are timeless. Grand Flagstone slabs can come in many colors, so they can reflect your style; not the other way around. With consistent 1.75-inch (44-millimeter) thickness, the even surface of your Grand Flagstone patio won’t present a trip hazard–even in your tallest heels or most comfy flip-flops. (source)

Your landscape is composed by two parts. The living one that contains elements such as grass, trees, flowers, and all types of plants. The hardscape is the other part, which refers to structures that are added into the landscape. This includes retaining walls, stairs, walkways, driveways, paved areas, fire pits, benches, fountains, planting beds, outdoor lighting, and more. Today, we will talk in general about the benefits of hardscape construction.

Accessibility is one of the main benefits of hardscape construction. Your yard will become more reachable during all seasons with concrete or stone pathways and walkways. Also, you will add transit areas to redirect the traffic of people where you want them to go. In this way, you protect your grass and plants and keep people away from places you do not want them to be or walk over.(source) Click on this source to read about other reasons why investing in hardscape construction can be a smart choice for you.
