In this before and after picture you really see how much of a difference new turf paired with a new mulch bed can make. Our client was having grub problems that continued to plague their lawn. We discovered while excavating the area that it was littered with old tree roots from a large oak that had once been there. We removed the old tree roots and brought in a couple yards of top soil. Creating a 6″ layer of top soil for the new sod to sit on.

Deciding whether or not you need to bring in nutrient rich top soil can be a bit tricky. Sod experts at Red Hen claim that adding topsoil is not essential for sod but it will provide some benefits. What topsoil does is increases a soil’s water and nutrient holding capacity. If you add it, the intervals between watering and fertilizing will be longer. When adding topsoil, 2 inches will provide good benefits only if you mix it into the existing soil. If you cannot have the topsoil mixed into the existing soil, then do not apply it! A thin layer of topsoil prevents grass plants from rooting deeply. This is important to note because you do not want weak roots. Weak roots will prevent your turf from growing strong and remaining healthy.
